Redevelopment of the public spaces in the Maladrerie area in Aubervilliers
Manifesto, as the head of the project management team, is spearheading the artistic and cultural strategy for the redevelopment of public spaces in the Maladrerie area in Aubervilliers.
As part of the NPNRU Émile-Dubois – Maladrerie project in Aubervilliers, Plaine Commune is leading a vast project to redevelop the public spaces in the Maladrerie sector. Designed in the 1970s by architect Renée Gailhoustet, the Maladrerie neighborhood is a remarkable architectural complex, combining housing, vegetation, and communal spaces. In 2008, the DRAC awarded it the 20th Century Heritage label, which became the Remarkable Contemporary Architecture label in 2016. Recognized for its heritage, it remains confronted with urban dysfunctions, a certain isolation, a lack of social gathering places, and the aging of a part of its housing stock.
Manifesto is supporting this transformation as part of the public space project management team, alongside Altitude 35 (prime contractor), OTCI, Biodiversita, and Coup d’Éclat. Manifesto's mission is to define and implement an artistic and cultural approach, in order to make culture a lever for transformation. It is based on the development of a collective narrative and on artistic interventions that resonate with the neighborhood's identity and the expectations of its residents.
The project management methodology is structured in three phases:
1- The collection of stories and ideas from residents and local stakeholders in order to define the spaces;
2 - The translation of these aspirations into technically feasible artistic proposals;
3 - And the production of works and their long-term appropriation.
In coordination with the urban and landscape strategy, the artistic direction ensures the coherence of the interventions, their local relevance, and their appropriation by the residents.
As part of this project, Manifesto leverages its experience in public space creation as well as its local presence in Aubervilliers, notably via POUSH, to bring together residents, artists, and local stakeholders around the future of Maladrerie.
