Jean-Michel Othoniel, Île Seguin

Client Département des Hauts-de-Seine
Place Boulogne-Billancourt, France
Date 2020

Manifesto brought together the curator Catherine Grenier and the artist Jean-Michel Othoniel to take part in the competition launched by the Department of Hauts-de-Seine to create an enormous art installation for the Île Seguin (2020). The team was one of four finalists.

Their project is entitled La Flèche de l’Égalité (The Spire of Equality). Standing on the very tip of the Île Seguin (Boulogne-Billancourt), a tall, narrow and openwork metal tower forms a new landmark in this regenerated area. With its gently tilted construction, the structure leans forward, as if it were in motion. Its metal girders and plates seem to be magnetically attracted, intertwining organically.

Jean-Michel Othoniel’s artwork alludes to the island’s industrial and working class past. The glass spiral reaches up to its peak and injects a dynamic tension. The delicate transparency of La Flèche de l’Égalité draws the eye towards the Seine, the “ship” created by Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines and the Vallée de la Culture. It constitutes a new landmark in the cultural policy of the Department of Hauts-de-Seine and aims to reinvigorate the Île Seguin’s appeal in terms of culture and tourism, alongside César’s Thumb and Rodin’s Call To Arms.

As the consortium’s representative, Manifesto managed the team’s entry for the competition, supervising and providing artistic, methodological, administrative and technical support, with the assistance of the engineering firm Bollinger + Grohmann.
