Ukraine: Photographs from the frontline
Manifesto Expo and Imperial War Museums are co-organising the exhibition Ukraine: Photographs from the frontline at the Mémorial de Verdun - Champ de Bataille.
From June 20 to November 30, 2024, the Mémorial de Verdun - Champ de Bataille is hosting the exhibition Ukraine: Photographs from the Frontline, conceived by the Imperial War Museum in 2023. The exhibition features photographs by Swedish-British photojournalist Anastasia Taylor-Lind, working in Ukraine since the Kiev protests in 2014. Her photos recall the decisive role played by war reporters and shed light on a daily life marked by fighting.
For the past two years, war has returned to the European continent. A war of attrition, in which artillery plays a predominant role. With the launch of the Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory in February, the front line has been frozen in networks of defensive trenches and ditches. And the media, of course, have compared the Donbas to Verdun.
“I’ve been reporting on the effects of violence on ordinary people’s everyday lives in Ukraine since 2014. I’m grateful to IWM and Mémorial de Verdun for giving these photographs a space where they can reach an audience far away from the war. I hope they can illuminate the ways, sometimes small and sometimes big, in which Ukrainians continue to live, adapt and build futures, despite violence and instability. IWM has curated years of work into an edit offering a snapshot of the many stories I’ve witnessed that document individual courage and optimism in the face of great challenges.”
